    Member Cull?

    Leander

There are 112,401 players in S1 UK. I kept scrolling up the rankings to the point where the players seemed at least potentially active and it includes at least 100,000 of them are level 10 or lower and/or inactive.

When these many accounts are clearly doing nothing, have never, and will never be used; why not cull them?

Surely it wouldnt be hard to introduce a criteria of activity in the last 6 months if below lvl 15 or 10 or something. Whats the point keeping all that additional server information?

    Cheers

We do not want to and are not allowed to remove inactive accounts. An account belongs to a person and he/she can play it as long as he/she wants to...and even if there is a pause of some months in between, the person might continue playing later on.

Are you seriously suggesting out of those 100,000 level 1 accounts, they have all logged in and been active in the last few months?

Come on! Theyre all a complete waste of server space, why are you defending those accounts?

they are just a few rows in a database, it's not like they consume actual resources and slow the server down or anything

No, the level 1 accounts are not active of course but they do no harm in being inactive forever. Randall is right, they don't take server space away. Even if level 1 accounts are not used anymore they belong to their account holders and we are not allowed to take their virtual property and goods.

O Ok. Bizarre that its your game, you run it and maintain it but we have rights that outrank yours? Unusual to me.

Cheers for the reply. It was bugging me.

An account created by a player belongs to him/her no matter if he plays it for 5 minutes or years. It's a legal question, an account is a player's virtual property.

Legal question? :O Are you really expecting someone will sue you if you remove a (evidently) unplayed account that has not been logged in to for more than a year (or never at all)?

I have to disagree with you here Leander

                  I've been through the Terms and Conditions more than once when they decided to change a fundamental part of the game on the dutch servers unannounced. I remembered this portion and copy/paste it here;

"De gebruiker verkrijgt geen eigendom of overige rechten op deze virtuele goederen buiten de gebruiksrechten. Dat geldt ook voor virtuele goederen die de gebruiker beschikbaar worden gesteld door het gebruik vanpremiumvaluta (zie § 10)."

                  Translated into english:

"The user does not obtain ownership or any other rights of these virtual goods, outside of the right of use. This applies to virtual goods offered to the player by the use of premiumvaluta as well (see § 10)."

This is simply how it works on the internet; you pay to be able to use something, but you never own anything. Kind of like a lease.

So basically Playa CAN delete accounts if they want to, as long as they announce it plenty of time in advance.
