Armor for the 3 followers

there is stat armor for followers as well, you have to move your mouse over their health bar to see their current armor works exactly as your main character

Is it important? I mean does it affect their defense or does it only work for your own char? I'm not sure about it since there is no "armor" stat for them... But I guess it's just hidden? Because I've found a pair of boots for my warrior and they have slightlym ore stats but way less armor, if I lose 1k armor and it actually does affect them then I will not replace them so I need to know, thank you!
