So spent a bit of time perusing the forums, but couldn't find much information past what was listed in the manual as far as how to join a guild and what the server restrictions are - thought I'd try here. I just started playing, but with the experience gained from a few other games that are somewhat similar want to be sure I'm on top of things.

-Does what server you are on restrict what guilds you are able to join?
-Are there level restrictions (obviously outside those mandated by the leader)?
-If I join a lower guild now, will I be able to disband and join another later on? If yes, are there any penalties?
-How do I go about joining a guild, do I merely send the leader a message asking for an invitation?

No. Both the character and the guild needs to be on that server...

No. Very often, there will be self-imposed restrictions on level, activity etc.

Sure. It is a good idea to join a guild, and get the bonuses offered by that guild as well as being part of the community (of the guild).
You may, as you grow in level become attractive for stronger guilds too and opt to change guild. There are no penalties. But you need to have been in the guild a certain amount of time (I think it is 24 hours, but I dont remember) before you can start joining guild battles etc.

-How do I go about joining a guild, do I merely send the leader a message asking for an invitation?

First, look at the guild description. It may already state whether it takes in new members or if it is a guild of friends IRL. Also, it can state restrictions (e.g. we only take in members over level XXX, please contact our support-guild YYYY if you are lower level. It can also say: contact ZZZ if you want to become part of our guild). Also, it may say that the guild expect its members to contribute with mushrooms, or just for the players to be active each day etc. So go have a look at those, and see if you should apply for membership in one.

Dont just wait for being contacted ;-) that may not happen.

Answer to my first questing seems to contradict itself, just want to make sure I understand correctly - If the latter is correct than my server does indeed restrict my options, and I'll have to either start a new character to join the guild I want or settle for a guild on the same server. But it began with a "no" to restrictions?

Every server is a game world of its own. You cannot join guilds that are elsewhere. Moving accounts from one server to another one is not possible either. It depends where you would like to play. If you want a new server, play on w8.sfgame.net as it is the latest world. If you prefer a certain language, play on US and UK servers (English), .pl servers (Polish) etc...if you want to join a certain guild and play with real life-friends, create the account on the server they play on.
