Forum unread posts problem

On the forum frontpage, there are these 'speechbubbles' that turns greenish, when there are unread posts in that subforum. They also turn greenish, when there are no new posts and even stay on, if I have read all posts.
Only thing that makes them turn off, is if I press the 'mark channels read' button, in the bottom of the front page.

I have the same problem. They apparently also turn green again even if there is nothing new for almost a month (ex. Contest subforum). It's kinda a useless feature if it behaves like that.

I know. It is the current software version's fault though and cannot be fixed.

Are you guys having plans for a new forum then, like the old one that died?

The old forum also used vBulletin. I don't know why it worked better, but we had to update everything because of security reasons.

Maybe it's something as simple as the layout?

I don't think the layout affects the performance. It is all about the code.
