swapping items without losing gems

Now that all my items are a long way upgraded (+9 or more), if I find a new item with better basic stats, it's essential to dismantle the old item in order to get back the splinters to upgrade the new item. However, doing this means I automatically lose the item's gem (of course, I could retrieve it, but then I would lose all the splinters). This didn't matter so much previously, but because the new orange gems are so rare, it's getting to be a real problem. Is there some way to fix it so that both the splinters and the gem could be retrieved? I would be happy to pay the normal 25 shroom cost to extract the gem, plus an extra fee if the item could still be dismantled afterwards!

You can only dismantle the item to get resources or extract the gem. Saving both for a new item does not work, sorry. I'd go for the resources as gems are easier to find.

I'm well aware it's not possible to do both at the moment. What I'm suggesting is that this should be changed!
