I also failed to beat him and decided to go on with 12th pet.

Leveling the 12th isn't a bad decision at all, you go with it till you beat 17th and then finish the habitat with it.

I believe they're trying to avoid the donating obligations in the early stages and spend the gold for themselves instead. But, sooner or later they'll have to join a guild since they need the bonuses.
