Fidget, you don't lose the mushroom. So you can get 40 more thirst everyday for 1 mushroom.

The extra beer you receive with the spell is free by the way. You can drink up to 11 beers a day but only beer 2-10 cost a

Yes, you need at least one. Just save the one you got from first quest of day and there will be no problem.
