Sounds quite normal (to have less distance between the servers) and that is because the updates the last few years have given the ability to players to level up a lot faster than we used to in the beginning (for example it took me 2 years when i started to reach level 300, now it's a matter of a couple of months)

Yeah even lvl 400 is no big deal now. Super boost on missions till 393( 2x more xp than before...they said smoother curve but same xp...no way thats hapening. is smoother curve yeah but with boost on top of that) so is easy peasy

yeah, faster leveling is a thing.

For example (dates: dd/mm/yyyy):
Gumb, one of the highest player back in the day, reached level 325 on 09/06/2012.
s1De launched on 22.06.2009.
See german forum

Today the highest player on w17 is lvl 341. Server w17 is 178 days old.

Back in 2012 you needed 1083 days to reach level 325,
today you need 178 days for 341 levels.
Which means you level roughly 6.4 times faster than back then.

Is this the same for Gold? I would think Gold is a much bigger factor for defeating the Twister

Nah gold isnt much different...still.
That why lvl 400s from recent servers vs lvl 400 from old servers are much weaker.
The increase of the "xp curve" was necessary to give more motivation, but came to late and was kinda a kick in the butt for old players. If they increase gold gains for everyone that will be the bigest kick on older players.

back in 2012 raids(first completed in early 2014) and the scrapbook already existed.
the tower was added in november 2012(+100% gold), the witch was added in november 2013(+10% gold and random item drops),
also i think late 2011 or early 2012 was the first time someone reached the 10 mio. skill-cost-cap.
then there are now a lot more dungeons (easteros, twister, the whole shadow-world), back in 2012 the events were less frequent
(e.g. german changelog: 21.12.2011 Frequency of events increased [every 2 weeks])Link.
and also people level a lot fast and a higher level equals more gold.
